New York City's Waterborne Disease Risk Assessment Program

The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the Department of Environmental Protection founded New York City's Waterborne Disease Risk Assessment Program to maintain data on the cases of Giardiasis and Cryptosporidiosis, track diarrheal illnesses (to prevent outbreaks), and track the prevalence of gastrointestinal disease due to the population's consumption of tap water .(2)

The Waterborne Disease Risk Assessment Program produces an annual report which sums up tannual achievements and data outcomes including trends of sales of non-prescription anti-diarrheal medication. Surveillance of these trends adds to our comprehensiveness of water quality.(2)
